MICA Grad Show

For the 2015 Maryland Institute College of Art’s graduate show season, I along with Amanda Buck and Lolo Zhang were tasked with creating a cohesive identity for both print and web uses to promote the months-long series of shows, presentations, and talks. In comparison with years previous, the primary housing for our identity was to be online and so we wanted to leverage some of the benefits of the digital medium and create a dynamic logo.

Our main logotype is set in Balto (by Type Supply), and with a little Paper.js script we created a dynamic logo with fifteen dots, each to represent one of the fifteen programs represented in the show (it’s great that it also happened to be 2015). The dots are interconnected to represent the collaboration and interdisciplinary nature of all the programs at MICA; no artist truly works in a vacuum. The dots move to represent the fluidity and evolution of each student’s body of work, and they scale as to suggest at certain times of the year it is their time to be in the spotlight (i.e. during their thesis exhibitions).

Because the logo is dynamic in its native format, we created a tool for quickly exporting the logo with random positioning of the dots so when used in static implementations we could use a different composition as much as possible.

We used the dot motif from the logo to create signage around campus. Above, in vinyl on an elevator door. Elsewhere we used stencils and pink spray chalk on sidewalks.
